What is Search Engine Optimisation, or SEO?

Search engine optimisation, or SEO is the process of making a website rank higher in search engines. It is an area that is full of over-priced consultants spouting smoke and mirrors to hide the fact that search engine optimisation is not rocket science. There is a process to it, and in many ways it is an art-form. At Think365 we not only thrive on creating great looking, usable websites, but also websites that search engines love!

Search engine optimisation activity is divided into two streams:

1. On-Page Optimisation:
Ensuring that the site is well prepared for search engine listing and indexing

2. Off-Page Optimisation:
Implementing actions that will drive traffic and links to the website (e.g. link popularity campaigns, paid placements, pay- per-click advertising etc.)

Our core 'on page' SEO techniques
  • Key phrase analysis

Targeting the correct keywords for your website begins with a full analysis of your business sector, your services and your competitors. Once we have a thorough understanding of your company and goals, we are ready to write content that features your key phrases and drives relevant customers and clients to your website.

  • Web Addresses

Using targeted keywords in the web address of the web page strongly suggests to the search engine the topic of the page. Think365 always recommend a SEO friendly address for a great boost to your SEO power. And don't forget we always include free domains in our web design projects. A typical example of an SEO friendly web address would be www.house-removals-sussex.co.uk.

  • Page Titles

Similar to web addresses, the page title indicates the topic of the page to website visitors, and search engines. It is important for search engine optimisation to have a page title relating to the content of each individual page. This is how a web site is fully optimised, on a per page or subject basis.

  • Page Content

Think365 are experts at writing interesting, engaging and relevant content for websites. Your identified key phrases should be used at an optimum level within the page content to indicate the topic of the page to the search engine. Think365 can advise on correct usage of keywords in content and perform keyword density analysis on your page.

  • Optimised Code

Search engines may not navigate fully around a website if the pages are slow to load and if the content of a web site is hidden amongst heavy code. Think365 enjoy writing clean, concise code that keeps the file size of pages to a minimum, ensuring they load quickly and are easily read and indexed by search engines.

  • Header Tags

Within the main page content of a website, as in most documents, separate topics or ideas should be broken up using headings. Headings and sub headings make the page easier for a user to see relevant topics and to break up the page visually. Headings also suggest importance of a specific topic to search engines. Think365 manage the style of the heading tags in style sheets so that the headings can be used to visual effect throughout the website.

  • Image 'Alt' Text

The content of image alt (alternative) text should be optimised for search engines. Search engines cannot view images and therefore if the image contains text the alt text should mirror this. Alt text is also set for each image within a webpage for accessibility (i.e. for users requiring page readers).

Some frequently asked SEO questions
  • What are meta tags and how important are they?

The meta tag is a piece of code on each web page which tells search engines what your page is about. In years gone by website designers would load the keywords meta tag with words to help drive traffic to websites. However, it is now widely agreed that meta tags don't make any difference to your search engine ranking (Despite this many so called SEO experts still sell meta tag analysis as an SEO service to clients!).

Meta Tags do still have a role to play. For example the 'description meta tag' provides the piece of content that appears in the search engine ranking pages when a search is made.

  • Are search engines really that complex?

In short yes, Google, Yahoo and Bing hold their search engine algorithms very close. They are constantly changing and upgrading these algorithms with the aim of supplying the most relevant and usable websites to users. Most of what the website design and SEO industry knows has come about by deduction and trial & error. Rest assured that the Think365 team strive to be at the very forefront of this developing area to ensure we provide the best possible service to our clients.

  • What is Flash and is it a good idea?

Flash is a fantastic way to add dynamism to your website. However care should be careful with the content displayed in Flash files as search engines are only just beginning to crawl those files. It is also widely agreed that search engines are placing a very low importance on Flash-based content. For this reason Think365 use Flash sparingly within our web design and only where it is relevant and beneficial to the structure of the web page.
